Why Fuel Prices Are Updated Daily Now?
Pakistan moved from a fortnightly pricing system to a daily pricing mechanism in August 2026. OGRA now calculates and publishes new rates every day, rather than every two weeks.
This shift ties domestic prices more closely to real-time international crude oil movements and the rupee’s exchange rate. It also means prices at the pump can now change far more frequently than in past years.
Why Have fuel Prices Been Rising?
Global oil prices have climbed sharply since escalating tensions in the Middle East, including the ongoing conflict involving Iran and disruption concerns around the Strait of Hormuz.
Pakistan imports the bulk of its crude and refined fuel, so it pays for oil in US dollars. That means two things move prices at once: the global crude price itself, and any change in the rupee’s value against the dollar.
The government also collects fixed levies on every litre sold, currently Rs 114 per litre on petrol and Rs 100 per litre on diesel, which stay largely constant regardless of crude price swings.
The New Rs 100 Fuel Subsidy
To offset the impact of rising prices, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a Rs 100 per litre subsidy on September 13, 2026, targeted at smaller vehicles.
Motorcycles, rickshaws, and Qingqi rickshaws qualify for relief on up to 20 litres per month. Cars up to 800cc qualify on up to 30 litres per month.
