Family Background
His Grandparents: Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward
Henry Elkind’s grandfather, Paul Newman, remains one of the most celebrated actors in American film history, known for roles in Cool Hand Luke, The Hustler, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Newman also built a major philanthropic legacy through Newman’s Own, a food company whose profits support charitable causes.
His grandmother, Joanne Woodward, won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in The Three Faces of Eve (1957). Newman and Woodward married in 1958 and remained together until Newman’s death in 2008.
His Parents
Henry is the son of Melissa Newman, one of Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward’s three daughters, and Raphael Elkind. Melissa and Raphael married on November 12, 1995. Raphael Elkind has reportedly worked as a middle school teacher, maintaining a private, non-public-facing career throughout his life, separate from his wife’s famous family.
His Brother
Henry has one older brother, Peter Elkind. Reports indicate Peter has shown interest in pursuing a teaching career, similar to his father, choosing a path away from entertainment entirely.
Growing Up in the Newman-Woodward Family
Henry Elkind grew up in Westport, Connecticut, away from the more visible entertainment industry circles his grandparents moved through for decades. Both Henry and Peter Elkind appeared in The Last Movie Stars, a 2022 Max documentary series about their grandparents’ lives and careers. In the series, both brothers spoke affectionately about Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, offering a family perspective on the couple’s legacy.
Despite this documentary appearance, neither brother has pursued the kind of public visibility their grandparents’ fame might have made available to them.
Education
Henry Elkind pursued a notably different academic path from an acting career. His educational background includes:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies from Hamilton College, where he also completed a minor in Music
- A period of study at Berklee College of Music
- Further training at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, through the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music
This combination reflects a clear, deliberate shift toward music and audio production, rather than any attempt to follow his grandparents into acting.
Music Career: Henny the Artist
Henry performs and releases original music under the stage name Henny the Artist. His work spans indie and electronic styles, and his SoundCloud profile identifies him specifically as a songwriter and producer based in New York.
He has released music through platforms including Spotify and iTunes, building an independent discography under this stage name rather than his given name.
Audio Engineering Career
Beyond his own music releases, Elkind has built a professional career in audio engineering and studio production. According to his LinkedIn profile, his experience includes:
- Studio Manager and Head Engineer at Bentley Meeker Lighting & Staging’s recording studio, a role he began in September 2022
- Freelance audio engineering and production work, operating under Henry Elkind Audio Engineering since June 2022
His technical skill set includes experience with Pro Tools, Logic Pro X, and Ableton Live, along with work on professional API and RND consoles. He has also contributed to building industry-standard recording studios and maintaining analog outboard audio gear.
Why He Stays Out of the Spotlight
Henry Elkind has consistently avoided leaning into his famous family name for public attention. Several factors likely explain this choice:
- His father’s own preference for a private, non-public career
- A broader family culture, modeled by Paul Newman himself, that valued privacy despite major fame
- A deliberate educational and career path built around genuine technical and creative skill, rather than celebrity connections
This approach mirrors his grandfather’s own well-documented discomfort with certain aspects of fame, despite decades of major stardom.
